Google Wallet tries but fails!

It’s a Mastercard with NO Fees! But not very useful!

Got my Google Wallet Card!

Wasn’t really that impressed with it.   I was hoping the Google Wallet card had a NFC chip in it but that was really not the case.   It comes with as a way to load money through your Google app or through the website.   There is no way to deposit money from a Adsense or for that matter from job.   You have to use another credit card to transfer money on to this card.  It seems redundant and not very well received around the tech community.   Even Android Police was thinking it was going to have an NFC Chip in it, but the functionality of this card was to me a lot under whelming.   It has so much to be desired for.

Possibilities are endless!

The Possibilities for this card are endless if you step outside of the box.   You could put it in a museum and see if anyone can guess card number by looking just on the front of the card, and not the back.   You could give out a full 20$ if someone figures out all the required information to use the card.

Other than that, here are what I see you can do with this card.   If you don’t have a NFC device and that is like 85% or more devices who don’t use NFC than you can at least use this as a way to make payments to a shop that accepts credit cards.   It however has that possibility.

Online Purchases!

If your planning to use this for online purchases it.   I haven’t tried this but can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work.   Just turn the card over and use the back 16 numbers that are on the card, they are divided into 4x4 sections ( EXAMPLE: 1234 1234 1234 1234 ).   You would use all those numbers as your credit card number and then you will need the 3 digit code that should be right beside where you sign your card.   It was the number you needed to verify you got the card.   Then you would be all set to use your new Google Wallet card online.  Again you can try this yourself but I don’t see any reasons why it wouldn’t work!

Other than that, you really don’t have much else you can do with this card.  So much for it standing out and creating even more buzz.   If this service survives it will need to be more useful in the future.   I guess you could say this is still in beta but I am not impressed with it and disappointed with the product myself!

Why Porting your Mobile Phone Number is Obsolete!

Using Google Voice with Skype and any international number through Rebtel

No need to transfer your number!

A few years back you would need to worry about keeping that number of yours for your friends and family, so they wouldn’t have to worry about updating that number of yours.   In today’s time we have a great option for everyone to keep your number where ever you go.   You no longer have to tell people to update there numbers for you.   After today, you will have a number that you can keep and use where ever you go.   It is only available in the USA, so please keep that in mind.

Google Voice Features

Google Voice is the one thing that I recommend to my family and friends, to have a number that you can give out to anyone, and keep your cellphone account private.   It is almost like Ring Central but it is virtually free for any Google user.  I have had my number for over 2 years and that is the only number I give out to anyone I know.   It helps me because I am using prepaid and it allows me to try different phones on different prepaid networks.   I also get unlimited calls and text messages when I use this service because most cell providers like Virgin Mobile US gives you unlimited data on all accounts.   So you no longer have to worry about how many minutes you have used.

Choosing your Number!

In order to get started with Google Voice, you will need to Choose your Number through Google.   This part is free, unless you intend to change the number later on.   Which is a 10$ one time charge for everytime you change the number   Unlike Ring Central, which cost your a monthly service fee for using their service.

RingCentral Office - Voice, Fax, Text and Conferencing. Your phone system in the cloudBenefits of Google Voice:

  • Number Forwarding
  • Number Filtering
  • Voicemail Transcription (Experimental)
  • One Number for the life of your account!
  • SMS to Emails
  • Do not Disturb feature!

As you can see there are many benefits to using this service.   It is also avail for the Google Android and Apple IOS devices such as Iphones, And Samsung Galaxy Smart Phones.   I have been using it on the ZTE AWE from Virgin Mobile USA and it works flawlessly without using any minutes!.

Now that you have seen the benefits of this service, I am sure you are going to go check it out.   If you decide you want to keep from giving everything to Google, you can always go to Ring Central and pay for their service which has many to all the same things you can do with Google Voice but that is up to you!   It just depends on what you want to do!

What is backup really worth to you? Top 5 Backup software!

Via Wikimedia.org

We’ve all had that done to us!

In the last few months we have had this very bad ransomware called Cryptolocker, and just how many people don’t really back up their important files.   I am going to alliviate some of this by talking about a few of the ways you could prevent this from happening in the first place.

This is not going to be a why it happened sort of blog post but more to the point of which backup software works best to help keep thos jpegs, and video files save from malicious acts.   Even the best security advise can not help you if you don’t help yourself so this is not a 100% guaranttee but at least it will head you in the right direction.

  • Mozy comes with both a trial version and even a free 5 gb version.   Each of these can help you save you files.   I personally have tried the free version and love it.  Although it isn’t my current backup plan.  I’ve used it in the past and still think it is better than nothing!
  • Google Drive comes with 15 gb free space and can let you share files to other people easily and simply.  I have this one with a 100 Gb plan for 2 years due to my Acer Chromebook.  That is one of the perks of buying a Chromebook.  You get free space for two years.  It also allows me to use this as a mapped drive.
  • Carbonite which I haven’t used for a long time, has been vetted by tons of experts.   It also has a 15 day trial for one computer unlimited space.   It has helped some people with keeping it in the cloud storage solution.
  • Dropbox is another Good service.   It allows you to share files quite easily and securely.   I haven’t used this service because I don’t need to.   I however have used it in the past and it works really well.
  • Just Cloud is the last one I would recommend visiting.  It can be used on any system and has unlimited storage.  Free Apps and multiple computer backups and shares files with friends.

On a side note, I use Always Sync with Google Drive to keep all my files sync with my laptop.   It however doesn’t need to be used with my Google Chrome. A simple 16 gb to 32 Gb SD card or USB drive can keep your files backed up on your Chromebook.   Some of these do not need to use Always Sync but in most cases unless you have a way to do an offline back up then your still vulnerable.   You can always buy a 500gb Hard Drive to a 1 Tb hard drive and then use Always Sync from time to time to keep it backed up!

You should always have more than one type of backup in case the unthinkable actually happens.   This post is to help you find out how to keep those valuable files from being ransomed and encrypted illegally.   Once a week you should plug in that drive and sync your files with the hard drive.   Do not keep it plugged in because that will not prevent the problem.   It has to be offline to prevent problems like this ransomware!

More Mobile Phones than Clean Toilets?

Photo by Yuichi Shiraishi / Flickr

On World Water Day, the United Nations released a very interesting, and possibly disturbing, factoid: “There are now more people with mobile phones (six billion for world population of seven billion) on earth than there are with access to clean toilets (4.5 billion).” Wow.

Things That Make You Go, Hmmm…

This statistic points out that developing countries still lack basic sanitation. But apparently do not lack phones. Or phone infrastructure. Again, wow. What is going on here? What’s next?

What’s Going on?

So how has the world come to a level where cell phones are so easily distributed, mobile phone service is so widely available, yet about 2 billion people do not have access to basic human civilization level of potties? How did we get here? And do we all fully understand the situation?

Sanitation issues extend beyond being unpleasant and uncomfortable. This isn’t like having to use a Port-o-John at a festival and being inconvenienced for the afternoon. Disease from poor sanitation reportedly kills over 4,000 kids per day. PER DAY.

But, Why?

  • Greed: The profit margin for installing sewers, plumbing, and bathroom facilities is significantly less than the profit margin in the mobile phone world. Greed motivates people. Hence, lots of phones. And on the toilets for everyone, not so much.

  • No Infrastructure: Many developing nations are only vaguely titled as such. In fact, it is development in specific that is lacking. Many countries simply have no infrastructure for sanitation. No pipes to bring clean water in. No sewers to take tainted water away. No treatment facilities to keep the cycle going.

  • Broken Infrastructure: In many countries the infrastructure that is present is aging and broken, leaking pipes and the like. Particularly in nations where a colonizing force installed the infrastructure and then a people’s revolution took over, which had no clue on what the former rulers had going or how to keep it going.

  • Government Sucks: Often in developing nations the government is so unstable or corrupt that serving the needs of the masses with sanitation services is either not on the agenda, or hasn’t been reached yet. Corruption often brings the developing part of a nation to the leaders of the nation first. Like we said, greed.

  • Corporations Rock: Yeah, not usually our first thought. But, greed can also bring the good. Granted, choosing between mobile phones and sanitation is not possible, but if you’re not going to have one, you might as well have the other. And the spread of mobile devices also brings the spread of social networking which brings exposure to things like a lack of sanitation.

FTW

While these mind-blowing statistics appear disheartening at first read, the spread of mobile phones is a positive development for developing nations. Mobile phones bring connectivity on more than just a cellular grid, but also between people and causes and even more people to help with those causes. Maybe the concept of clean toilets just needs a really good KickStarter campaign.

Is that special someone out there or is it me?

Single In Evansville, Indiana!

Yep, I am tired of being single and have dating sites such as Zoosk, POF (Plenty of Fish), Christian Mingles, And Christian Singles.  Each one of these worked to a point but isn’t really that helpful.   I have decided that some of these Free Dating sites are nothing more than a lot of noise.   Nothing ever seems to be happen with me on those sites and when I do try to approach any other user and send them a message, I usually just get ignored.  I have been looking over the past year for someone who might make me happy.   This has been the first year that I have used these sites with no luck.   It wasn’t like I wasn’t trying but it just seems like their are to many people going the same way.

To much noise!

These sites seem to make to much noise and not enough results for me.   Each site tries to make you believe they have a special algorithm to find your perfect match.  This however is not always going to be true.  I have yet to find my perfect match and they have yet to give me anything but a lot of noise and some fake identities and scammers.   I finally just have given up my searches with these sites because they seem to just not work.   I’m not getting younger and thus this is my way of finding that one true person.

Facts About Me!

I run this blog, and it has been running for over 7 years.   I like writing, and enjoy a good science fiction movie and shows.  I have not gone out in groups for a while, and consider myself a recluse.   I like to stay home and write.   I also love Technology and thus this is where my blog comes into place.  It does not stop me from working at a local but it does help me to connect to the world.   I am S/W/M(Single White (Divorced) Male) in his upper 30’s who would love to go out to the movies and find someone who is a Christian.   That is one of my standards, even though we have many people out their.   My last marriage, I made that mistake and will not make it again.   That being said, I also would like them to not smoke or do any drugs.   They must have Goals, that is another must.   If you don’t have goals then go look somewhere else.   My Goal is clear is to keep this site going and that sooner or later it will bring in more profit that I will know what to do with.

I’m a creative person at heart and thus this is where my blog comes into play.   You should also have some creative traits but that isn’t actually a requirement but is a plus.  I’ve had enough adventure for a lifetime and would like to just watch the sun rise and sun set with that special someone.   This is basically what I am looking for.  I’m not really a flirt, I am more of an arrow guy.   So if your looking for those types of guys this is not me.   I am thankful for a lot and know God has his plan and I am just waiting for it to happen.   Do not know when or how just know it will happen.   I am waiting for God’s promises.

Are you Interested?

If I have gotten your interested then you have a few ways to either learn more about me or you could just contact me.  If your looking to learn more about me then, please join my Mailing List.  If you know someone who is looking for a soul mate, don’t forget to share this on Facebook and Twitter.   I am sure someone is out there for me and this post is a way to find them!  You can contact me through POF and Christian Mingles if you want to chat with me but it is totally up to you!

What I have learned from Person of Interest Show!

When I first started watching this show, I thought it was unique but then last year we had the revolation of the Snowden controversy and how the government was collecting all sorts of information. Then this became so relevant to the government and how they are collecting my information. You will see in this show so much talk about how they are collecting it. It is scary and I am sure the Government has put this out to help have a plausible deniability factor to it.

My Problems with Virgin Mobile and the ZTE AWE!

Virgin Mobile likes to mislead people!

When I was researching this phone, I saw this on their website and thought well it looks to be promising and that I could pay the extra 15$ and be able to teether my phone to my laptop whenever I needed to.  Even though, I am simply am enjoying this new phone of mine.   The idea that they made me believe that I could easily without effort pay them to allow me to teether my phone is simply absurd.   I shouldn’t have to circumvent the new security feature in Android 4.1.2 which  Google decided to break tethering and prevent people from using those so called teether apps.   I have yet to find one that will work.

Calling all Geeks!

I’m going to have to probably root the phone and install a Cyanogen mod on it to be able to use the tethering option on the phone.   I would however like to keep it the way it is.   Rooting the AWE be to much trouble for me right now.   Since I am mainly using a Chrome Book and have yet to install a Linux Distro to the machine.   I’d have to do that first before I could even root the device and you know how that is!

Does Anyone know of an app that will do that without having to break the warranty of the phone as Virgin Mobile told me over the phone?   I would break the warranty if I rooted the phone.   LOL That was a laugh.   If you know of an app in the Google App store please leave a comment and help everyone out who might have the same problem!

How to Secure your Chromebook from threats!

When I first started this journey to find a way to use my chrome book to blog and keep it safe, I just didn’t know how hard it was to switch from Windows or even the Linux system to this! It wasn’t as if I had any choice in the matter. It was in my price range, under 300$ and thus I decided I was going to overcome some of the obstacles of the OS. I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy it but I am saying you need to know what your getting into before you try some of these things.

Reviewing the Acer Chromebook C710-2856

The New and Old!

As you know my Acer Aspire with Windows 7 was falling apart and I had to figure out a way to keep blogging without breaking the bank.   I happen to fin this nice little system for under 250$ and with the amount of positive reports from people around the globe about this laptop.  I figured I have to try it out myself.  As you know I simply love to buy products from Acer because I believe in them so much.   Every time I buy something from them, they just seem to last and thus I couldn’t resist trying this little Chromebook out.   I also thought this might be something that could be given as a gift to other people since Christmas time is almost upon us.   I just didn’t realize what I was getting myself into with this laptop.

Specifications

Let’s start off by detailing to you what the specifications are for this Chromebook:

Chromebook With Chome OS:

  • Screen Size: 11.6”
  • Screen Resolution: 1366 x 768
  • Processor Type: Intel
  • Processor Model: Celeron 847
  • Processor Speed: 1.1GHz (Dual core)

Display:

  • Screen Size 11.6’
  • Screen Mode HD
  • Screen Resolution 1366 x 768

Network:

  • IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n (With Fast Ethernet Technology)

USB:

  • 3 USB 2.0

Comes with no optical drives, so no DVD’s or CD can be played with this device.   I am sure someone was going to ask this so I figured it was time to point that out!  Now I can tell you every detail about the specifications but it really doesn’t need to be discussed.

Pros and Con’s

I am sure some of you are think there isn’t really anything positive that I could say about this laptop but you’d be wrong.   I started using this laptop last month for 3 weeks now and thought it was high time we at least do a review of this and try to talk about my experience.

Now let’s get to the juicy parts of this article.   Would I recommend this to everyone, I would say NO.  If your doing photo editing or something that requires high processing editing then you might as well go look somewhere else.   The good part of this Acer Laptop is quite obvious but can be oblivious to others.  You can Stream movies and Shows and watch them on the laptop.   Google did a good job of this.   Just like Chromecast, you can stream them from your laptop to the big screen if you want.

Processing Speed

The speed of the laptop when used with the Chrome OS is very different compared to my old laptop but then again, I am sure it was getting sluggish and probably needed a good clean refresh of the system.  I wasn’t how well I would like this system but I am not disappointed at all with what I expected to be doing with it.   I wasn’t going to be doing much other than blogging, surfing the net, and streaming movies and shows using HULU, CBS, and Netflix.  Let’s not forget about Pandora, which also worked perfectly for my needs.  It works perfectly on this Acer Chromebook.   I had no problems watching shows and movies from all those providers and many more.

Hard Drive

If your planning on putting a lot of music files and documents on this laptop, think again.   You can however use USB drives to increase it to what ever size you may need but that will impact your time of the laptop if you don’t have it plugged in then you are are going to be using batter power to power the USB HDD.   It comes with a 16 gb Solid State Drive and it is really quite.   You can increase the space to 48 Gb’s by adding a 32 Gb SD card which is helpful for some.

Screen

Most videos I streamed worked flawlessly and were quite nice to watch on the 11.6’ display.   They say it is High Definition and I believe it is.  I have had no problem surfing the web and checking out other web sites to see if there would be any problem with viewing them on a smaller screen and it was nice and no problems.

Battery

The battery power in this was quite amazing.   It at times has lasted me more than 5 hours on one charge an that has been a record for me.   The size and power alone is something that is definitely big plus to me because I don’t always need to keep it plugged in.   Very portable and can be taken to McDonald’s or any Wifi Hotspot.   I will be discussing this in detail later, and how to setup a VPN on a Chromebook! :)  So stay tuned!

Keyboard and Touchpad

Now to tell you I had a learning curve for the touch pad would be understand statement.   You have to understand that it has different gestures for double clicking and right and left clicking.   So when you first start using this laptop you will need to be prepared to go to the Chrome Book Help section to help you out and figure out all those new gestures.  The keyboard is like most other laptops and does a superb job at letting me type.  It all worked out in the end with me because it worked just well for all my needs.

If I haven’t changed your mind and you would like to try this laptop out for yourself you have a few options available to you and here they are:

Most of the time almost everyone has this version of Chromebook because it is the cheapest there is.   It is quite responsive and I have no qualms with this laptop.   I even like the size more easier to carry around and not be so bulky.

*Those nasty disclaimers* Some of the links in the site are for use to help keep my website going and thus any Amazon links are undoubtedly affiliated with my site.

Electric Cars Deliver More Value for Money

Electric cars are great for the environment but somewhat less friendly on the wallet. Because of their battery packs, electric cars tend to cost between $8,000 and $15,000 more than comparable gasoline-powered sedans before federal tax and state clean tax credits, as The Washington Post reports. Through researching new vehicles, you’ll find the price differential may finally be narrowing, if the current crop of electric vehicles is any indication. Here in no particular order are some of the best electric cars for your money:

Chrome OS really needs some VPN providers like VPN4ALL!

Chrome OS Has No major VPN players! I’ve been digging through the internet the last few weeks trying to find a VPN service that would work decently with Chrome. Most of the options we have are either L2TP/IPSec + Shared Or L2TP/IPSec + User Certificate. So we really don’t a whole of options in the past few weeks. I do knwo we also have an OpenVPN option but am unsure on how to use that with what information I was given when I set up my account. I sent a email to technical support about thsi and am waiting around. I did a awesome revew of VPN4ALL and still believe they are one of the ones you should use when it comes to protecting your privacy and security.

3 Reasons Why Cheap isn't all the best idea!

When we first starting making computers and cell phones, it costed an arm and leg to have those really nice slow systems. At the early age of all this, it was consider the best there was for electronics and everyone was at AWE over it! I don’t think we ever really imagined that the price of electronics would go down to almost nothing. I’m currently working on a laptop the Acer Chromebook 11.1 Display and later on I will review it fully. The problem with some of the stuff that is so cheap is in several places.

Reviewing the ZTE Awe from Virgin Mobile!

The Virgin Mobile ZTE AWE comes with a 1.2 ghz processor and the screen is really nice. I did switch from the Kyocera Rise to this because of a flaw that would just make the screws come off and break apart. I have had over a week to play around with the ZTE phone and I am quite impressed with the service. I thought it would be good to at least talk about some of the obstacles you will need to overcome to switching and that way you could be ready when the time comes!

I have been seriously thinking about what a leader does and it has come to my attention there are five traits that are essential for any leader to lead and I will touch upon each and every one of these!

“A Leader leads by example!”

This one really talks about what each leader should do.   In my current working environment, we see people who are getting away with murder and this creates an environment that we don’t have to listen to the person who is in lead.   It is simply the fact that if they say one thing and then does something totally different with another person than why should we listen to the complaining.

Expecting Expectations!

If you don’t expect someone to give you some kind of expectations than you aren’t working.   Each place I have worked for and worked at their are defined expectations of what is required and what is needed.   I have seen this from other places but as of late, it has been quite difficult to understand or even grasp with my current working environment due to leadership.   If only leaders would be more proactive and try to convey all their expectations clearly and want you to succeed everyday your at work then it would make for an even better day!

Encouraging feedback!

whether your the lowest person on the totem pole or the boss in a company you are constantly looking to be encouraged and defined by your peers.   So we all want some kind of encouragement and even feedback on how we are doing in the day to day grind.   Nothing says your a leader until you learn that you didn’t get where you are without the people who you lead to great success, no matter how low they are in the scale.  if only leaders would do this more often you would see how success comes in waves to everyone involve!

Get your Hands dirty!

This is also seems to be getting away from leaders they have not done some of these jobs that they claim they have in the past and have forgotten the small guy.   If you really want to make a difference in today’s economy, you should stop what you doing and do a job one of your employees are doing just so you can remember just how hard they are working and thus you can give them so great encouragement and feedback on what they are doing everyday of their lives.

These are just four of the many traits any leader should use to become even better at their job and to make their job and others a success by understanding their employees and what they do.

First Look: The ZTE Awe from Virgin Mobile!

I recently Switched!

With the Kyocera Rise that kept on fall apart, I decided I needed to invest in a better phone.   This seemed perfect for me.  5 MP camera and tethering capabilities if you add 15$ more.  I got this from Walmart but wanted to talk about the ZTE AWE just a few minutes and let people know I’ll be talking about this in more details.   I am quite impressed with screen size and other things.   The weight of the phone is less bulky and doesn’t weigh as much.

I just got tired of having to tighten those darn screws into the phone on the Kyocera Rise even though this was a cheap phone to begin with, I didn’t want to have to have to worry about it.   So I opted for a little bit more money to get the Virgin Mobile US ZTE Awe (Virgin Mobile is one of the sponsors to my website, because I like their service and want others to know about them).   In the coming weeks I will be talking about it even more but wanted to show you what I gotten the last few days and give you something to look at and possibly get yourself.
