Windows 7 Beta -- Unexpected results

Now know people's thoughts on the EULA of Windows 7 Beta. Now let's talk about this according to a blog post From Windows Vista Places :

No benchmarks allowed. As in previous beta releases of Microsoft operating systems, the license agreement includes a prohibition on speed tests:

You may not disclose the results of any benchmark tests of the software to any third party without Microsoft’s prior written approval.

[Windows Vista Place]

[ad#ad2-right]Now We know people have put this through there test and I am sure any technology magazine has done the same. If I know people they will be doing this no matter what the EULA (End User License Agreement) has to say. Although if Microsoft was worried about Third Party's from finding out this software it wouldn't be to hard for them to get there hands on a key and the ISO after all it was released to the public and that means anyone could get a copy.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple or even some Linux Enthusiast did there own test on this OS. I serious doubt that Microsoft will come after people over this because they have made it public but let's go in and talk some things.

I have done my own test and come to the conclusion that it is 5% to 8% faster from Vista. Although I have a Vista OEM with some bloatware software it still in an even faster boot time and shutdown time on Windows 7. I also checked out the Memory Usage of each and I find that Windows 7 Beta using almost Half of what Vista Premium is using.

Microsoft Windows 7 Beta blog says this [Windows 7 is faster, more reliable, and makes it easier to do what you want. Both the everyday things and the killer "is that really possible?"]. Now saying that they have thinned it down because the memory usage. I also find the User Interface is really well build for being a beta system. I also like the User Access Control choices, they've made the UAC a lot friendlier and let's you choice how to use it better. There is of course going to be issues with Windows 7 Beta and if you have a problem you can always visit the Forums to get help solving those problems.

[ad#ad2-left]If your curious and want to test it out for yourself go find the software and do your own test, I am sure people are doing it regardless of the EULA.   I did this test to make sure Microsoft wasn't trying to hide the truth of the Windows 7.  I wanted to find out for myself, because of how it can "seem" to be faster doesn't always mean it is.  After my test, I am thinking Microsoft is on the right track with Windows 7 beta, and I hope they keep on track.

My Recommendations for all who read this is "Go and grab your copy and try it out yourselves".  You only have until January 24, 2009 to get your copy of Windows 7 Beta with a Key.  Now people can do what they want but I am hoping people keep the pressure on Microsoft to make this Operating System get even better in the future, because ultimately we are the ones who will have to use the system.

First Impression of Windows 7 Beta!!

As of getting this beta from Windows Download server, and yet having to activate it. I'd thought I share some of my impressions of this Operating System. Although I must make sure you all know this isn't the final version of Windows 7, and it will undoubtedly go through some major changes before it is over.

windows-7-beta1

As you can see I've installed this onto an Intel System 2 core system 1.6ghz and 2 gigs of ram.  I must say that this was a really smooth transition from Vista to Windows 7.   I don't think it has ever been this good with Vista.   Something that I noticed right off is that now I can have User Account Control Customized.   Yes you've heard it right some things you can do with Windows 7 is turn it all the way off(Do not Notify Me) to Always on (Always Notify Me).

win7uac

With this one I can now not have it Dim all the time when It wants to warn me.  This is the best part of this UAC no longer will I get annoyed every time it warns me.   I'm liking the feature more and more.

[ad#ad2-right]So I've just installed this and wanted to see what would work and what wouldn't, so far here's what I've found to work without a hitch:

and what doesn't seem to work right now is:

Later on I'll do a more complete list of items that will or will not work with this beta.  Although this is something that really surprises with most of the programs right now.  I've not had any major issue installing the software for the ones that work.  Only small hitch was for the Cricket Broad band software I had to tell it to install the driver anyway.   I am really liking this and hope they keep it the same all the way through.  I like the speed of access and the preview panes for finding what I need to find.  I also like the backgrounds they have installed as default but that is one thing that will most definitely change as they progress they will find even better ones.  Now all I have to do is get the Beta Key and I'll be set until August.

PS3 launches "HOME" so you don't have to go anywhere for the Holidays!

Sony, Launches "Home" today and according to the Washington Post and I'll quote:

PS3 owners will be able to download and check out the new service starting tomorrow. Home is free to Web-connected owners of the game console, though users may opt to spend money to spiff up their avatars and virtual apartments.

[ad#ad2-left]

It looks very much like it will be a success with the users.   This should make it a lot easier to meet people and discuss what they are playing.   It looks like they are trying this in BETA and should out of beta in a couple of months.  Sony should start offering service for everyone  as they roll out it to all parts of the world.   It will take time for it to get to all the pople so please be patient.

Vista Sp2 Beta Still not up yet!

[ad#ad2-left]In my Previous article I talked about how you could be in the Beta, and I just checked this morning. It looks like they took that article down. I don't know if they are changing it around or what but it will be. I hope they fix this soon. I would like to start testing this on my Virtual Machine first before I install it on my real machine!!  I will update this when they do get it up and running.

Is this Windows 7?

As you can see that looks to be the final release of the start screen. In the past they haven't change the start screen, it looks to be really polished and ready for use with Windows 7. If anything, I think the boot screen will be permanent and definitely not temporary. On a Side note, I found this video as well:

<a href="http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-US&playlist=videoByUuids:uuids:60e5f8c6-09f3-4a09-bac0-355b8a7b7dcc&showPlaylist=true&from=shared" target="_new" title="Windows 7 Demo 1">Video: Windows 7 Demo 1</a>

[ad#ad2-left]This video I almost suspect is the release they did at the Professional Developers Conference and is probably going to have the beta in hand. Although I could be wrong this looks to be almost like Vista? Why is Microsoft trying to make Vista turn into Windows 7, probably due to the fact that Vista had such a rotten launch they are hoping people will see Windows 7 as if Windows Vista didn't even exist.

I also found one more little Video that looks to be promising, it's called Windows 7 Super bar. This little Video looks convincingly like this will be kept in Windows 7 but you know how Microsoft is on beta's. Any how, Here's this one:

Windows 7 Super Bar from Paul Jenkins on Vimeo.

As you can see the super bar feature looks to be quite interesting and quite nice to have. I will bet that will be a great productivity improve in Windows and it might even be more like MAC OS X. I don't know but it seems to be something that Apple should of done a long time ago!!

You asked for it, Now it's real -- Vista SP2 Dec 4,2008

Beginning Thursday Dec. 4th, we will be making the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 Beta available to everyone through a Customer Preview Program (CPP). The CPP will launch on TechNet and be available to anyone interested in trying out this service pack. The CPP is intended for technology enthusiasts, developers, and IT Pros who would like to test Service Pack 2 in their environments and with their applications prior to final release. For most customers, our best advice would be to wait until the final release prior to installing this service pack.

[Via Technet]

[ad#ad2-right]Yes you heard right, you can get into the Beta of Vista SP2 and not have to wait till April.  Some things to remember:

  • It is a Beta

  • It will Have Bugs

  • It is for people who want to test it out

  • It should only be installed for people who need to test it out

Some of the changes that they are going to incorporate into Sp2 are support for new types of hardware and emerging standards that will grow in importance in the coming months.  The complete list of changes can be found here.   I will be testing this out sometime this weekend to give it a full thorough check out.   I will give a report later on this month possibly first part on January I would like to give it a complete test.   To test it out yourself, check out this link for directions on how to download it.

Vista has a new Vulnebility!

According to Techworld.com,  Vista has a new Vulnerability that could let a hacker infect a Vista machine with a rootkit.  The talk from them is quite intriguing.   I will quote it to better let you know what the Vulnerability is:
The vulnerability could allow a hacker to install a rootkit, a small piece of malicious software that is very difficult to detect and remove from a computer, Unterleitner said.

[ad#ad2-left]Phion notified Microsoft about the problem on 22 October. Microsoft indicated to Phion that it would issue a patch with Vista's next service pack. Microsoft released a beta version of Vista's second service pack to testers last month. Vista's Service Pack 2 is due for release by June 2009.
[via Techworld.com]

The way they could do this is through the Device IO Control which in turn could corrupt the Kernel of Windows Vista.  Now we all know that Microsoft will release a patch quicker than 6 months away.  According to this article, people are already looking for the exploit and want to know more about it.  I would be willing to bet they will have a patch out sooner than later.  Probably January or Febuary, which will be a big deal because no one will expect it.  I would also imagine hackers will start trying to figure out how they could install software as quick as possible before Microsoft pushes out the patch.   So what can you do to protect yourself, Get a firewall, a Antivirus and learn how to protect yourself to prevent yourself from getting a computer virus.

A good free VPN Client -- OpenVPN & more

I've been doing some research on what might be good to use in case, I was away from my home network.  I was thinking how safe am I at Starbucks or other places that I might doing my web.  So I did a little looking around to see which one I liked and I came to the conclusions that only one I need right now is:

openvpn

The nice thing about this was the simple installation of the software and how easy it was to set it up. This service is in beta but seems to be really well done with regards to the end users. When you install this software and want to connect it uses the OpenVPN software with there configurations. OpenVPN, is a open sourced SSL VPN solution and is free to use. The way this this free is of Ad Supported banners. Now it is cheaper than paying monthly for a VPN service. The ones I've found so far are these few:

  • OpenVPN (FREE)(*advertisement)(Linux, and Windows)

  • Always VPN (Prepay) (5 GB to 80 GB limit) (Linux, Mac and Windows)*Out of Beta

  • Hotspot Shield (FREE) (*advertisement) (Windows) (3 gig Cap)

  • WiTopia (40$/ Year) (Mac, Linux, and Windows)

[ad]There is of course others out that but these are just a few that I saw that looks like the cheapest there is.  Others I've seen cost 40 to 50 dollars a month.   If you have any other ones that are free or cheap let me know.  I don't think we need to pay a lot just to have security on an open network. I'm certain that they're more out there but will keep looking for more later on. I did my initial research and will come back and find more.

*Update Feb 8, 2009*

As of recent a friend emailed me saying telling me to check the site out again and I did.  Not sure when they went out of Beta because I've not been using Always VPN lately due to my Broadband Cricket Prepay Internet.  I just checked and yes they are charging here's the break down:

  • 5GB - USD 8.50

  • 10GB - USD 15.00

  • 20GB - USD 26.00

  • 40GB - USD 33.00

  • 80GB - USD 47.00

So I must ask why they didn't just keep the 5 GB limit with the Advertising, I do not know but  I did want to let people know that it is no longer free and no longer in Beta.  I went from Always to OpenVPN which still works despite the fact they are using Always VPN back client.   It's open source so it will probably change to something else sooner or later.   If you see it changes let me know, I will update more when I find out more!!

Windows 7 Milestone 1 Leaked!

Many people have been wanting a copy of this so called elusive copy from PDC to test out and see where Microsoft is going.   Most developers are wanting to start to get into the stage of figuring out how they can get a step ahead of everyone else.   That being said, people have started to leak the Windows 7 on the Torrent sites.

We must assume Microsoft expected this and kinda wanted this to happen because when they gave this out they didn't make it have any major copy protection.  Although we must not forget that there will be fakes out there and people are downloading this at a tramendous rate.  Most people will download it in under a day if you let it go!! I have not downloaded it because I am trying to get into the beta team for Windows 7 and don't want to be to critical on the system.

[ad]

Note to some of you who intend to this there is ways to activitate Window 7 and you can always play with it for 30 days for grace period.  People must release that even though it says Windows Vista it is actually Window 7 and they were originally going call this "Vienna" and "Blackcomb".   So if you want it badly enough you can find it by going to the promising torrent sites and download it yourself.  Your best bet it to Google : WINDOWS 7 Torrent

Windows 7 has the same hardware requirements and Windows Vista for those interested!!

Hulu Discusses Private Beta, Suggests Public Launch Time Frame

I had the chance yesterday to sit down with Eric Feng, the CTO of Hulu, to discuss how things have gone during its private beta and where the service is heading in 2008. Here are some of the things I learned:

  • Hulu currently has “several hundred thousand users” who have submitted “tens of thousands” of feedback messages.
  • The public launch should come in the next couple of months, probably around the end of March.
  • High definition video will be rolled out gradually over the coming year with more and more content; the company believes that 2008 will be a year when online video companies start focusing less on convenience and more on quality.
  • Hulu has tripled its amount of content since private beta launch, with many episodes of shows going back to the first seasons, not just the last five that have aired on TV.
  • Downloads might come in the long term, but they are not something that Hulu is focusing on currently.
  • RSS feeds have been added so users can keep track of new content added to the site.
[Via TechCrunch]
I didn't copy everything just the points that I thought were most important for people to to find out about what Hulu is going to do in the coming months.

Hulu Launches Private Beta, Makes Very Good First Impressions

Last March NBC Universal and News Corporation announced a joint venture that we initially thought would result in a direct competitor to YouTube. As details emerged, it became clear that the two media conglomerates were not planning a video sharing website for user generated content but rather an online distribution channel for premium video content, including TV shows, movies, and short clips.

In the months following the companies’ initial press release, we gave the joint venture a lot of grief for failing to pick a name for the project, eventually settling on a name - Hulu - that meant “cease” and “desist” in Swahili, copying Google’s mission statement, and receiving not the greatest vote of confidence from NBC Universal’s own chief digital officer.

Behind all of this criticism was a high degree of doubt that NBC and News Corp. were ever going to get Hulu out the door before the joint venture became irrelevant. In September, NBC had even announced a video downloading service that appeared to cannibalize its own joint venture with News Corp. However, this past week Hulu confirmed that it would indeed hit its self-imposed October deadline by launching in private beta on Monday, October 29th. And this past Friday, CEO Jason Kilar and other Hulu representatives demonstrated the new service to us.

While we have not been able to try out the private beta ourselves yet, I was very impressed by the preview of Hulu’s interface and the bulk of its features. Before going into my thoughts about the website, however, I should get some of the many details about Hulu on the table, especially since it’s been months since the original announcement.

Hulu is still a joint venture exclusively between NBC Universal and News Corporation. It exists as a website through which users can stream a collection of TV shows, movies, and short clips on-demand for free without any limits on how many times you can view each video. Hulu also exists as a distribution network of premium content for several partner websites - AOL, MSN, MySpace, Comcast, and Yahoo - that will display Hulu’s videos for free but in their own branded players. In addition to these partnerships, users themselves form a viral distribution network of sorts since Hulu allows its videos to be embedded in any website and shared via email. Hulu makes money in all cases from advertising, which it displays in and around the videos it serves. I’ll go more into the details of embedding and advertising later on.

The only problem that I see is that you can't expand the picture it's in a window with other stuff!!

Kubuntu 7.10 Beta

Today I installed the beta for Kubuntu 7.10 and I am surprised how well it worked with the integration of the old and new. I do admit there are always going to be some problems with it. As with anything that says beta you have stuff that always goes wrong. There is this one problem with it that I am going to have figure out what. It says that it can't update because it is being used.

They updated the Firefox extensions to include ADblock Plus and some very nice tools with Ubuntu. You can download more extensions with this then you could before. Firefox loads a little quicker. It also has several other features that is best left for you to explore.

It Handles the non-free devices a whole lot better. It shows you have a device that can be updated with that little window. If this device is restricted it also tells you this.

All in all I've have to give this a pretty good update for Ubuntu, I'll be curious to see what else I'll find when I get even deeper into the system. I do know I like the graphics they added. It almost has an XP feel to it. If you would like to know more just visit the website and try it for yourself.
